More about the festival

Before you head out to enjoy the arts, let’s take a moment to step back in time and learn where TroyFest originates.

Jean Lake was born in Troy, Alabama, in 1929 and, without any formal training, began painting at a very young age. Throughout her life, her art was shown throughout the Southeast, quickly gaining popularity and winning awards.

Following her death, friends of Jean approached The Troy Council on the Arts and Humanities to combine local art shows into a big two-day event to showcase the region’s artists. This led to the first “Jean Lake Memorial Art Show” in 1982.

In 2003, the festival was moved to the Downtown Square, renamed TroyFest and made available to the public for free. Jean’s art continues to be shown across the world, and she is still honored as the namesake of TroyFest, with a scholarship pursuing the arts awarded in her honor each year.
