Local Spotlight: Troy University Arboretum

Troy University Arboretum

One of the many nice things about living in a college town is the access to educational resources. In fact, there’s a self-described “living lab” for the flora of the Wiregrass region known as the Troy University Arboretum that is open to the public seven days a week from sunrise until sunset.

What’s an Arboretum?

According to the website, the mission of the Troy University Arboretum is to “acquire representative species of the flora of Southeast Alabama and to display them in situations that mimic the natural conditions under which the species would occur.” The Arboretum is especially interested in the rare and uncommon finds and works to preserve all of these communities and habitats.

The result is a chance to step into the natural beauty of an area that stretches from Macon, GA, to just outside of Montgomery, AL. The Troy University Arboretum is housed on 75 acres adjacent to Troy’s main campus and on its 18-acre Pocosin Nature Preserve.

The Arboretum furthers the educational opportunities for the university and the surrounding area. In particular for the areas of study in ecology, field botany, field vertebrate zoology, environmental science, entomology, and more.

Take a Stroll

If you are looking to make weekend plans, add a visit to the Troy University Arboretum to the list. Be introduced to the variety and diversity of the Wiregrass from the perspective of plants. Enjoy the simplicity of nature as you walk and explore the grounds. Bring a blanket and pack a picnic. Don’t forget to grab the binoculars for bird watching!

There are more than 300 different types of trees to discover as well as a 2.5-mile nature trail with a swamp, stream, and pond—each representing and creating an ecosystem to observe and learn from.
