Coming Up: TroyFest Art Festival 2021

TroyFest Art Festival 2021

It’s officially springtime! And this year as things slowly and safely move forward, outdoor events are like fresh flowers. So, get ready for a creative bouquet with the upcoming TroyFest Art Festival 2021 on the square April 24th-25th.

Family Fun and Art!

TroyFest Art Festival 2021 is made possible through collaboration among the Troy Arts Council, the City of Troy and Pike County Chamber of Commerce. The annual festival was canceled last year due to COVID-19, but it is ready to bring back the inspiration! Locals and visitors alike will browse booths displaying original art works, handmade goods, pottery and so much more!

This fun annual tradition was established in 1982 by the Friends of Jean Lake, who was a Troy native and artist. By 2003, it was renamed to TroyFest and expanded to downtown on the square. It remains a well-known arts and crafts festival for Central Alabama.

In fact, the Alabama Tourism Department once named TroyFest a “Top 10 Event” in the state’s annual vacation guide in 2014.

The Festival’s Namesake

Jean Lake was a natural-born artist with no formal training. She started painting as a child and developed what is referred to as folk art. She remained in Troy and as a young woman married James Lake. Together they raised three children.

She worked at First Farmers and Merchants National Bank, but never stopped painting. She began showing her artwork at festivals in the Southeast and won several awards. Jean was described as a fun-loving, free-spirit with the ability to capture the feeling of the rural South in her work by those who know her. Find out more about Jean Lake in an article published in Troy Messenger in April 2016.

As always, a highlight of TroyFest Art Festival 2021 will be the presentation of the scholarship awarded to a local high school senior pursuing the arts.

Location and Hours

Vendors will be spread out in downtown Troy along the square. The free event is open to the public beginning Saturday, April 24th, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, April 25th, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. As of now, all recommended CDC safety guidelines and precautions will be in place.
